Society of St Gregory Summer School 28th July to 1st August 2014

This year’s summer school, to be held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, will provide participants with an opportunity to explore how the Second Vatican Council, and, in particular the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, provides a sure compass for our liturgical practice and the life of the Church in and for the world. Last year, to mark the Year of Faith, the Society funded a number of free summer school places for younger people involved in liturgical ministry. The scheme was oversubscribed and very successful, not least in terms of the calibre of people it attracted. This year, a further fifteen free places for young people aged between 18 and 35 are being funded by the Society. For further information, please visit www.ssg.org.uk

Important Gift Aid Message

The good news for taxpayers is that the income tax personal allowances have been raised considerably in recent years and the current limit of income, before tax starts to be paid, is £10,000. The less good news is that for donations to charities, such as the amounts paid to the Church under Gift Aid Declarations, these rely on your paying income tax. If you no longer pay income tax and have a current Gift Aid Declaration (or for those giving since before 2000 a Deed of Covenant), it is important that you advise the Diocesan Gift Aid Office either direct or via Shirley Kendrick at St Wilfrid's.
Technical details from the Diocese...
This is an important message to all those who give money to the Church and have made a Gift Aid Declaration (or pre-2000 have made a deed of covenant in favour of the Church). In order to be valid, your Gift Aided donation to the Church, when added to all of the other donations you make under a Gift Aid Declaration, must not exceed the part of your income subject to tax. Now that the first £10,000 of your income is not subject to tax you may need to advise Ann Gee in our diocesan Gift Aid Office (a: Gift Aid Office, Willson House, 25 Derby Road, NOTTINGHAM NG1 5AW; e: giftaid@nrcdt.org.uk; t: 0115 953 9843) or via your parish Gift Aid organiser (Shirley Kendrick) that your donations are no longer to be made under Gift Aid.

Lay Catholic Chaplain Position at HMP Sudbury

HMP Sudbury is a category D rehabilitation and resettlement prison, with facilities to hold 600 prisoners who present a low risk and can reasonably be trusted in open conditions. The prisoners here are offered full-time and part-time education and evening classes, workshops and a selection of training courses. They are also given the opportunity for paid and unpaid employment, training and education in the community. HMP Sudbury is located in Derbyshire, between Uttoxeter and Derby. We are currently seeking to recruit a Lay Catholic Chaplain on a ten hours per week sessional contract. The successful candidate will be required to be part of an ecumenical, multi-faith chaplaincy team sharing responsibility for the care and support of prisoners and prison staff. They will also be expected to take on appropriate generic chaplaincy duties and when required and ensure that the diverse religious and spiritual needs of the prison community are met. Applicants will need to be excellent listeners and communicators, and have a non-judge mental, calm and confident approach. For information and to apply, please contact Ahmed Kola at HMP Sudbury (e: ahmed.kola@hmps.gsi.gov.uk; t: 01283 584088). If you require any further information about Catholic ministry in this or other prisons, please contact Fr Roger Reader, the Catholic Bishops' Prisons Adviser at roger.reader@cbcew.org.uk

This Catholic weekend has activities, talks & workshops for all age groups, including well-supervised streams for children & young people. Mass will be celebrated each day and there are teachings from Sue Whitehead, Andrew Fava & Pippa Baker, and thought-provoking drama from Steve Murray and the local Puppet Power team. Workshop - Economics is For All of Us

There is going to be a workshop on Saturday 17th May from 10 am till 5pm called Economics is For All of Us. Its purpose is to help non experts – especially people with an interest in social justice - make sense of matters of finance and economy that often come up in the news but seem baffling. The workshop is being run, as part of their economic justice programme, by the Jubilee Debt Campaign. The organisers like to know roughly how many people are attending so it would be helpful if you could let me know if you would like to attend: sruane1@btinternet.com or 0116 2703053. Saturday 17th May 10am to 5pm. St Thomas More parish centre LE2 3HN (where Southernhay and Knighton Roads meet). There is plenty of parking. The event is FREE. We are suggesting a shared table for lunch. Many thanks for your help, Sally Ruane (Diocesan J&P Commission and St Thomas More parish, Leicester).

Rosmini Centre - Interpretation of Scripture Course

Saturday 10 May 10.30 to 2pm : “Interpretation of Scripture” presented by Paul Michel, lay chaplain at Ratcliffe College, followed by shared table lunch. Suggested Donation £10. There is a Mass at 10am. Please register by phone 01509 813078 or email rosminicentreinfo@gmail.com

A Taste of Hinduism

On Tuesday 13 May there will be an opportunity to experience ‘a taste of Hinduism’ at St Patrick's Parish Centre on Beaumont Leys Lane in Leicester (LE4 2BD) between 7pm and 9pm. There will be speakers from both Christian and Hindu traditions, plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and an invitation to sample typical Hindu food. According to the 2011 census 2% of the population of the East Midlands identify as Hindus with the greatest concentration in Leicester at 15%. There will be Hindu children in many of our Catholic schools so this event should be of interest to school staff and governors as well as to clergy and lay Catholics interested in gaining a better understanding of our neighbours. If you would like to attend please notify Patricia Stoat on pmstoat@gmail.com or by phone on 0115 950 9773 [leave a message]. Our caterers need to know how many people are coming !! We hope to run a further evening introducing Islam and Muslims in June and this will take place in Nottingham. Canon Edward Jarosz on behalf of the Diocesan Interreligious Relations Group.
